The Pitfalls Of Having Car Insurance |
by Steve Johnson

Every State in the USA requires that one owns car insurance before they can drive a motor vehicle. There are disadvantages to this, despite the benefits. Individual states have their own problems, but there are some general problems of note.

The first disadvantage of car insurance is that a person’s credit rating partly determines their car insurance quote. Some companies in California, for example, charge much greater rates for people with a low credit score. They might never have gotten into an accident or received a ticket, yet they are still charged more money.

Another disadvantage, though less commonly seen, is that sometimes people wreck their cars on purpose to that they can avoid responsibility for them. They can scam the victims of their ‘accidents’ with excessive medical bills. Being a good citizen then makes one responsible for the other person’s behavior.

Shopping around for car insurance can be worthwhile. The first policy you find shouldn’t necessarily be the one you buy. Car insurance agents sometimes hear that you had found a better rate, and strive to be competitive with each other. Discounts of up to ten percent of the policy cost are possible this way.

Be sure that your policy meets your state’s requirements for insurance. Some states require higher coverage on personal property or medical liability. Others require certain minimum values for uninsured or underinsured motorists.

Insurance companies do sometimes only have the licenses to operate in limited areas. The insurance company you’re looking into might not have be licensed to operate in the state you live, and you cannot obtain legal insurance from them if they don’t. Take special notice of this fact if you taking online quotes. Most companies do know of this, but it’s still better to check to make sure.

If you’re having trouble finding a good agent, of if you’ve just finished moving into a new town, try asking around. Friends and co-workers could put you in contact with a great insurance agent that will help you get the best policy at a good rate. Don’t forget to ask if you qualify for a multiple policy discount thanks to your buddies.

It’s best to shop around to get the best deal possible. But it is also important to remember that it’s not always a good idea just to go for the cheapest rate you can find. You may find that it’s better to spend more money to get a policy from one of the bigger, better-known insurance companies.
